Eating more fish could reduce the risk of depression


Higher fish intake is beneficial for prevention of depression. A study that was carried out in Europe shows that men who ate fish more often had a 20 percent lower risk of depression while women have a 16 percent lower risk of depression than those who ate it less often.
Fish contain omega-3 and other fatty acids that could alter the structure of brain cell membranes and modify the activity of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which are thought to be involved in depression, the researchers said. People who eat more fish are healthier as high fish consumption may also be related to a healthier diet and better nutritional status, which could contribute to the lower risk of depression. Omega-3 fatty acids support brain function, heart health and even lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
